This month Emma Livingstone, UP’s co-founder and CEO, was invited to speak at a CP conference in Norway held to mark the launch of their CP guidelines. Invited by Nor-CP, an organisation dedicated to bridging the gap between researchers, medical professionals, and CP-affected families in Norway, Emma was asked to present a keynote speech to the conference. Here she shares her experience of the conference:
Amidst the buzz surrounding Norway’s unveiling of CP guidelines, I was deeply moved by the collaborative energy infusing the event. Witnessing researchers, clinicians, and patient organisations from Nor-CP joining forces with a shared determination to enact meaningful change left a lasting impression. Their combined efforts showcased the power of ambition, common goals, and unwavering perseverance.
Speaking to an engaged audience of more than 400, my keynote tackled the essential elements of lifelong care for individuals with CP. It pinpointed obstacles to effective care and advocated for a proactive approach that seamlessly integrates life skills, especially during the critical transition from adolescence to adulthood.
I was also lucky enough to be part of a symposium focused on transitioning into adult life with Dr Jennifer Ryan. Together Dr Jennifer and I were able to highlight the unique hurdles faced by those with CP on their journey, stressing the importance of education and support in empowering individuals to navigate their paths successfully.
Beyond the conversation about Cerebral Palsy, the conference served as a platform for global collaboration. I cherished the chance to reconnect with colleagues worldwide, all united in their mission to reshape perceptions of CP and improve support systems for those living with this lifelong condition.
As the conference ended, attendees left energised, armed with fresh knowledge and a renewed sense of purpose. I was left feeling that the journey towards optimising CP care continues to be challenging. However, together we are fuelled by collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to meaningful change.
