This Mental Health Awareness Week, let’s celebrate the power of movement for everyone! Especially for adults with Cerebral Palsy (CP), staying active is crucial for both physical and mental wellbeing.

Why Movement Matters

For everyone, staying active is a key part of maintaining good mental health. But for adults with CP, who may face physical challenges, getting moving can be even more crucial. Here’s why:

  • Barriers to movement can lead to a decline in physical and mental health. This includes decreased mobility, increased pain and fatigue, and social isolation.
  • Movement is empowering. It releases feel-good hormones, boosts confidence, and helps you feel more in control of your body.

The good news is, even small amounts of movement can make a big difference.

Empowering Movement

Moving your body doesn’t have to mean intense workouts. There are many ways for adults with CP to find joy and empowerment through movement, including:

  • Adapted sports and activities: Organisations like CP Sport and World Ability Sport offer inclusive activities for all abilities
  • Daily movement: Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, gardening, or participating in a gentle yoga class can all contribute.
  • Social connection: Joining a walking group or fitness class designed for people with disabilities can provide both exercise and social interaction.

Benefits Beyond the Physical

Regular movement offers a range of benefits for adults with CP, including:

  • Improved mental health: Physical activity releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects.
  • Reduced pain and fatigue: Regular movement can help manage muscle stiffness and fatigue.
  • Greater independence: Maintaining strength and mobility allows for more control over daily activities.
  • Social connection: Participating in group activities can combat isolation and loneliness.

Finding Your Move

The message for everyone, including those with CP, is: get moving, your way! Here are some tips

  • Focus on activities you enjoy. It could be anything from gardening to adapted sports to crafting.
  • Start small. Even 5 minutes a day can make a difference.
  • Find a supportive community. Join a group fitness class designed for people with disabilities or connect with online communities.

Moving Forward Together

This Mental Health Awareness Week, let’s move beyond limitations and celebrate the power of movement for all. By promoting inclusive activities and fostering a supportive environment, we can empower adults with CP to experience the physical and mental health benefits of movement. Remember, everyone benefits from moving  their way to wellbeing!
